Locals are fighting for the future of historic access to a beach and a coastal path after longtime landowners have begun installing gates and signage seemingly to deter the public.
Residents and visitors to Newquay say they are deeply concerned about the changes that have seen private property signs and fencing erected on a pathway at Glendorgal Headland leading to Porth Beach that has been used by locals for generations, although it is on private land. They say other access points have also been boarded off or blocked as work has got underway for the £9.5-million redevelopment project of the closed-down Glendorgal Hotel.
It echoes an issue dating back to 1882 when locals won a campaign against the then land owner, who also tried to gate off the access at Glendorgal on the north coast. At a public meeting more than 140 years ago it was found that exclusive control of the pathways leading from Porth to Watergate Bay was "prejudicial to the interests of the locality". A committee was appointed with the power to protect the public's rights over the path.
