Happy Yorkshire Day
1st August 2026
Whitby
Recent weeks have seen those of us who live in God’s Own County celebrate the skills of both Haaland and Hockney, and rejoice that the nation’s finances are safely, at last, in the hands of a Yorkshireman, Chancellor John Healey. (Yes, ok, that is on the back of the ascent of another northerner called Burnham, a Lancastrian!).
But now we face the trials of one of the greatest shaming stories to afflict the sporting world. I am not referring to the now-abandoned privatisation of football by Trump fanboy Infantino, but to the (alleged) scandal of ‘finger-clicking-gate’ at Saltburn Cricket Club. The BBC has a detailed account of the unfolding crisis here.
So, gain sustenance, and enjoy the day, with a hearty meal of fish ‘n’ chips from Harry Ramsden’s (or if you are posh at The Magpie in Whitby – see above), with mushy peas1, with a dessert of rhubarb crumble, possibly followed by Wensleydale cheese, or a pomfret cake1 or two, washed down by Yorkshire Tea, or Taylors of Harrogate coffee, or even a pint of Theakston’s.
1. Note: the combination of mushy peas and pomfret cakes may well keep you ‘regular’.
..‘appen.
