Really interesting article. I was actually a little disappointed that AQA didn’t include any questions on health and the role of organisations in the exams this year given the global pandemic. I wish that the questions had more contemporary content at times. Maybe they do and I just don’t see it but I would like geographers to more fully engage in current affairs - cost of living crisis, fossil fuel dependency following Russias invasion of Ukraine etc.

Thank you for the feedback, and thank you for your support with my Substack. The exam boards are hamstrung with an outdated spec, written in 2015, and it won't change for at least 4 years. But, they could try to fit the modern world into them, I agree. I note you are an AQA-spec teacher. I haven't seen the 2024 AQA papers yet. If you could find time to send me the pdfs of them, I would be very grateful. My email is davidrredfern@hotmail.com. No worries if not.

Hi. Sorry David I didn’t see the message. I didn’t teach in college this year (was doing 1-1 tuition) so sadly don’t have access to the papers - I hope someone sent them to you. Actually my daughter was taking her A level this year - and got an A* and headed to St Andrews. Cadi West. I think she wrote to you a couple of times. I used your resources in my tutoring and Cadi and I used your resources to help her write better essays. You really were a god send! Thank you. I think you are the best resource for all students and teachers of A level geog!

That's quite an endorsement, thank you. I just like to help, as I know the exam boards have cut back on their 'guidance' in recent years. I was Chief Examiner for AQA Geography for 15 years, and when they told me to stop what I was doing, we had a bit of a 'disagreement' and I resigned. They DO NOT like what I am now doing, but they can't stop me either.

Congratulations to your daughter. My younger son works as a doctor in Fife, at Kirkcaldy, and he took us to St Andrews last year. It's a lovely place... despite the golf! And, yes, I have got the 2024 papers now, thanks. Best wishes.
